Mistakes entrepreneurs make when creating their own websites

Creating your own website may seem economical and quick.
However, many entrepreneurs discover too late that their platform is becoming a hindrance rather than a support for their business.
Not for lack of will, but because some pitfalls are difficult to avoid without digital expertise.
Here are the most frequent mistakes I encounter when an entrepreneur starts out on their own.
1. Confusing “beautiful website” with “high-performing website”
Many people focus on aesthetics, the choice of colours or the animation of the menu.
The result: a visually appealing site but unable to convert.
An effective website is based first and foremost on strategy, not aesthetics.
2. Wanting to say everything, everywhere
The entrepreneur wants to present his background, his offers, his results… and ends up with pages that are too long and scattered. The visitor quickly loses interest.
A clear and structured message is better than a long, difficult-to-follow speech.
3. Neglecting user experience
Complicated menus, pages that display poorly on mobile, poorly placed CTAs… These are small errors that cost big opportunities.
The user should be guided naturally towards action.
4. Copy the competition
To be inspired, yes. To reproduce, no.
A copied website does not reflect your identity, your value, or your difference.
Your website should express what makes you unique.
5. Using tools without a real strategy
Many people create their website on Wix, WordPress or Shopify without knowing how to structure an effective architecture or optimize SEO.
The tool does not produce the result: the methodology does.
6. Ignoring visual consistency
Inconsistent branding (colours, typography, tone, images) immediately weakens the project's credibility.
Visual consistency is one of the primary markers of professionalism.
7. Don't think "business"
A website is not just a simple showcase.
It must attract, convince and convert. Many forget this strategic dimension.
A high-performing website is a business tool, not a decorative element.
Conclusion
Creating your own website is possible, but rarely optimal.
An entrepreneur gains time, consistency and results when they rely on expertise that combines strategy, design, UX, branding and optimization.
